500 and Counting ~ Scene 2 ~ The Gas Stop (Help write a story)

Recently, I ran across a short-story contest of five hundred words or less, based on the picture above, and just for fun, I decided to write one. I knocked the five hundred words out in an hour, so I didn’t expect anything amazing, but the feedback from my family and friends surprised me, so I wanted to offer this up to my online community of friends and see what your thoughts are. Each week I’ll use readers’ suggestions and write five hundred more words based on your feedback. And just to make this interesting, I’ll offer up one of my novels free to the commenter whose suggestion I use. Okay…let’s write a story.   (If you haven't read Week 1 yet, please click on the link. Otherwise, the story won't make any sense, believe me. There's a link, which will bring you right back.) Prologue ~ Week 1 Chapter One Week 2 Gino started upright. Beads of sweat poured from his forehead and saturated his mop of hair; he n

What if we could live our lives backward?

That was a real tweet. But then I got to thinking… I’m wrong! There’s a reason we don’t start stories off with, “And they lived happily ever after.” What fun would that be?  If someone hand-carried you to the last day of your life and showed you your wonderful husband, your beautiful children and grandchildren, your successful career , and then said, "Happily ever after. See you in the next life.", you’d feel cheated. "Hey, where are the arguments my husband and I got into that led to the fun making-up scenes? Where’s the memory of the pain I experienced bringing those beautiful children into this world, and the frustrations I dealt with during their teenage years when I thought I might lose them? Where’s the gratification I felt at climbing my way to the top of the corporate ladder at my employer where no other woman had been? Where’s my life? I want the good times and the bad stretches. I want to overcome the traged

"She wondered what kind of work her boyfriend was doing this week" Excerpt ~ ENTANGLED DREAMS

If you missed the first few excerpts of Entangled Dreams , click here . Don't worry; there's a link, which will bring you right back. Last week Nicky explained her estranged relationship with her father, mostly over her boyfriend, and the fact that even though she just heard about her father’s death, she still had to go to work or she wouldn’t be able to pay the rent. This week’s excerpt: Jonathan wasn’t home when she stepped inside their small apartment, so he wouldn’t be able to drop her off at work. That was good. It would mean he wouldn’t be able to forget to pick her up afterward either. After attempting to wash away her problems in a steaming-hot shower, she pulled on her short-shorts and skin-tight top, tying it into a knot behind her back, and then brushed her hair up into a ponytail. After dabbing on thick, black mascara, she was out the door in minutes. As soon as she stepped off the flight of stairs to their apartment, Jonathan jumped out o

The old wooden café appeared safe enough, but the lack of surrounding cars gave Gino Canale pause as he opened the door of his hybrid. The GPS he and Sheila had been using had directed them off the highway in search of gas. But there were no gas stations around, just one country store on the outskirts of this Northern California town. Sheila opened her door, but he waved her off. “Stay in the car. Let me check out this place.” As usual, she did what she wanted and jumped out anyway. “I have
