Some doors we open, some we are shoved through... SPLIT DECISIONS

As I was doing my final read-through of She Belongs to Me eighteen months ago, I realized I’d left several options open for a new story.
Like my real life, my female protagonist had many options to fail or succeed in her life. Every choice she made--good and bad--brought her to a crossroads. Some situations, of course, were out of her control, just as they are out of our control in real life. We don’t always see what awaits us on the other side of the door, and that can be scary or thrilling, happy or sad, wonderful or horrifying.
One of my favorite quotes to deal with all of these choices—good and bad—is…
“I know God won't give me anything I can't handle. I just wish he didn't trust me so much.” ― Mother Teresa
I liked the quote so much I used it in my newest novel, Split Decisions, as I discussed this very issue of the choices we make and the situations others thrust us into without our approval.

As I considered my life, at all the horrible things that have happened to me, all the bad decisions I’ve made, I realized that if I hadn’t made every one of them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. And more importantly, I wouldn’t have ended up where I did twenty-four years ago, the year I met my husband. He is the reason I am alive and the reason I can write ‘happily ever afters’.

So remember, it doesn’t matter what door you decided to walk through--or were pushed through--you can always make it the door to your dream. No matter if someone shoved you through it or if you opened it on your own volition, make that decision work for the good

Until next time, happy reading, friends.

If my musings interest you, you will find all of these concepts in my stories. My first novel that I mentioned above, She Belongs to Me, follows the life of a woman who has gone through many tragedies, but via one decision meets a man hell bent on saving her from them. She just has to learn to trust again and let her past and secrets go. And of course, the book that spurred this post is Split Decisions, the follow up story to She Belongs to Me.
From there, all my Southern Romantic-Suspense Novels have a slight connection to each other, so you can continue the journey and meet different protagonists with different issues and tragedies to overcome. Every story has a mystery, there’s always a gentle message, and above all, there’s always romance and suspense.

Until next time, happy reading!

Carmen

  1. Carmen, I say that all the time, my past has made me the person I am today. Without the bad decisions, wrong turns and craziness in general, I would not be with my husband, I would not have the two best children in the world, and I wouldn't feel so blessed as I do today. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Have a wonderful day!

  2. Thank you for stopping by and commenting, Terry! And it's so true, isn't it? We can learn from our mistakes--and our heartaches if we choose to. And we should, because sadly, nothing we can do today will ever change the past. It's gone! All the whining and crying in the world won't change it.

So I pull up my big-girl pants and carry on, in preparation for a better tomorrow. :)

"As in any fairytale, everything good must come to an end." ENTANGLED DREAMS:

Now, if you’ve read any of my novels or excerpts, you know I don’t do happy-go-lucky beginnings; and as in any fairytale, a little rain must fall, or in the case of my stories, I prefer a monsoon. This week’s excerpt: But alas, as in any good fairytale, everything good and wonderful must come to an end. After the tragic accident that snatched her mother away from Alexandra, her father moved them away from the beaches of Destin to another beach in Florida. Cocoa Beach. Cocoa Beach was loud, the water murky, and there were no weekend adventures as there had been in Destin. Her father married her evil stepmother, Lilith, who Alexandra was certain was a witch with her long, black as midnight hair and pale-white skin as if she’d never seen sunlight. Her father had admitted he wasn’t in love with Cruella, as she had come to think of the witchy woman, but that he’d wanted Alexandra to have a mother and siblings. Well, she definitely got that. The k

To prologue or not to prologue, that is the question. Readers, please weigh in!

Personally, I love prologues. They get you right into the action whether it was in the past or something exciting that is to come. But that’s exactly why most agents’ blogs I’ve read say not to use them. Paraphrasing…“If you need a prologue, then your story must not be strong enough…” Hmm … well, I like them, and I use them. But I’m curious what readers think, and I’d love you to weigh in. AND, if you have some great examples, please leave the title in the comment section. Now … here’s what I’ve noticed. Plenty of bestselling books have used them, even though they aren’t always called prologues . Same diff in my opinion. My biggest example is ‘Twilight’. If that little blurb wasn’t in the beginning, I don’t think I would have made it through the first chapter. How about movies? I don’t watch a lot. But I’ve started to notice how many have “prologues”. I also don’t have cable, but I have NetFlix, and hubby has just started watching ‘Breaking Bad’. Okay … I
