Nicky clinched the phone in her hand. “He’s okay, then, right?” “No, dear, he’s not. He hit a tree, Nicky. But according to the emergency-room doctor, he died instantly.” She sucked in a breath. “Thank you for calling, Lilith. I’ll call you later. I have to go.” Nicky dropped her head onto the steering wheel of her car and wept. What difference did it make?
