If you want different scenery, sometimes you have to turn around.

I’m sure it’s been said before, but I didn’t find it on Google, so I tweeted it and then retweeted it, because I really liked it, and now I’m blogging about it.

It’s so true, isn’t it? You may be staring at a trash heap, but with a little cleaning up or by simply turning in the opposite direction, you could be gazing at a serene sunset.

I cannot go into detail, but let’s just say I’ve been trying to explain this concept to a close person in my life forwellforever actually. I learned this lesson at an early age; I think I was twenty-one. Of course, I was well ahead in years mentally, as I’d been living on my own since I was seventeen, really since I was twelve, as no one was ever home in my house.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I am who I am because of what I’ve seen and experienced, and I’m so happy with my husband and children that I wouldn’t change a thing. Everything led me to where I am. However, at twenty-one, I'd realized that nothing would ever change if I kept heading in the same path I was on, so I made a change.

And I do the same thing now. If something isn’t working, I try not to whine and moan about it, but change that something to something that will work. Yes, there are plenty of failures, and a lot of hits and misses, but that’s how we learn what works and change our scenery for the better, by ceasing to do the things that don’t work and do the things that do.

I hope that makes sense and that you can take something away with you.

Until next time, happy reading, friends!

  1. I understand this concept! It applies to everything in life. When it comes to my writing, turning around and trying something new was a concept that I started/failed/started/failed several times before I found a formula that works for me. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Good thoughts, very important to remember that sometimes, as you say, if we just take another look, or from a different perspective, the whole situation appears in a different light. Great post.

To prologue or not to prologue, that is the question. Readers, please weigh in!

Personally, I love prologues. They get you right into the action whether it was in the past or something exciting that is to come. But that’s exactly why most agents’ blogs I’ve read say not to use them. Paraphrasing…“If you need a prologue, then your story must not be strong enough…” Hmm … well, I like them, and I use them. But I’m curious what readers think, and I’d love you to weigh in. AND, if you have some great examples, please leave the title in the comment section. Now … here’s what I’ve noticed. Plenty of bestselling books have used them, even though they aren’t always called prologues . Same diff in my opinion. My biggest example is ‘Twilight’. If that little blurb wasn’t in the beginning, I don’t think I would have made it through the first chapter. How about movies? I don’t watch a lot. But I’ve started to notice how many have “prologues”. I also don’t have cable, but I have NetFlix, and hubby has just started watching ‘Breaking Bad’. Okay … I...
