What do you do when you can’t find the motivation to write? #AmWriting...or maybe I'm not...

I’m not talking about writer’s block. That was a different post.

What happens when you know where you’re goingknow what scene you want to write next, but just don’t feel like it?

Sometimes, things that happen in my personal life twist me up in knots, and I just don’t feel it. Oh, I know I should be writing. I want to write. I just can’t seem to turn off all the distractions and just do it.

Well, writing a blog post about your issue is one answer. Posing the question to my writing community is one of the first things I do. Although, usually, I’ll wait for the answer to my dilemma before posting. After all, even though I asked the question that brought you here, I assume you’re here because you also want to know what to do when this happens to you.

Of course, if you’re here because you have an answer, please leave it in the comment section. What might work for some, might not work for others, so the more solutions to this dilemma, the better.

Okayso, here’s my answer.

Without a doubt, my number one solution to overcome my lack of writing is to read something in the genre I’m writing, something I normally cease to do, as I don’t want any interference in my story.

Call it jealousy, or what you may, but when I’m reading a supernatural book when I’m writing a supernatural book, my mind instantly wants to get back to writing. Whether I’m thinking (and I know it's terrible, but every author has thought it about at least one book that they've read), ‘I can write better than this’ or ‘why the heck didn’t I get this idea’, I swear it knocks me right back on-track, and I can’t wait to get to my keyboard.

So, what’s yours? I’m sure I’m not the only person who suffers with this ailment. Spill! Inquiring minds want to know.

Until next time, happy WRITING...not the opposite! J

  1. I also read a good book! I sometimes give myself a pep talk. That usually works. But sometimes I actually indulge myself and take a few hours off. A nice walk in the woods or on the beach helps to revive my mental attitude.

    1. That's so true...sitting behind the desk, just staring at the monitor, doesn't help. Only problem...it's so dang hot here right now. A few more weeks, and I'll be able to watch the otters on the lake, which always lightens my mood.

Thanks for visiting and offering your ideas, Donna! <3

  2. I agree. I change of scenery totally helps. No reason to sit in front of the pc if nothing is going to happen. Have to give yourself and quality break.

    1. So true... Just going to a coffee shop definitely helps. If I'm not at the house, I don't get distracted by the laundry, dishes, dust... :)

  3. I read a book that I KNOW I enjoy - just surrounding myself with a good story is enough to creak me back into gear!

To prologue or not to prologue, that is the question. Readers, please weigh in!

Personally, I love prologues. They get you right into the action whether it was in the past or something exciting that is to come. But that’s exactly why most agents’ blogs I’ve read say not to use them. Paraphrasing…“If you need a prologue, then your story must not be strong enough…” Hmm … well, I like them, and I use them. But I’m curious what readers think, and I’d love you to weigh in. AND, if you have some great examples, please leave the title in the comment section. Now … here’s what I’ve noticed. Plenty of bestselling books have used them, even though they aren’t always called prologues . Same diff in my opinion. My biggest example is ‘Twilight’. If that little blurb wasn’t in the beginning, I don’t think I would have made it through the first chapter. How about movies? I don’t watch a lot. But I’ve started to notice how many have “prologues”. I also don’t have cable, but I have NetFlix, and hubby has just started watching ‘Breaking Bad’. Okay … I...
