What to read BEFORE Fifty Shades of Grey... #AmReading #AmWriting :)

No...I haven't read Fifty Shades of Grey...not even the sample, but...


Before you think that I'm a prude, hang in there with me...you might agree. The thing is...I have no trouble with the book Fifty Shades of Grey--or most erotic books for that matter. In fact, it shocked one of my writing communities when I--a Christian--disagreed with Smashwords attempt to censor books.

See...the way I see it, if we start censoring books, eventually they'll start censoring everything. And who draws that line? Some people have even accused me of writing Mommy Porn. I assure you, I don't, though. But that's the point. Someone will always have their clean monitor set higher or lower, so who knows where that fence is.

I do, however, think anything regarding underage children or abuse against beings that cannot defend themselves, should be censored, because one, it's vile, and two, it's an illegal act. Two consenting adults, though... I just don't know where we can draw the line. Hey, even God gives people free will, but that's another discussion, and as you know, I don't discuss religion or politics. I'm simply not afraid to state my beliefs.

So...after that disclosure, here's the thing. I simply do not like books about BDSM, because I think they send the wrong impression to young women--and men--casting women back into roles that our foresisters worked so hard to set us free from.

BUT...that doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to enjoy a romantic and sensual novel. I've been arguing for years... Why is it okay to show violence in Young Adult novels and movies, but sex between a monogamous couple--even married--no way!

So...if you're like me, a reader who likes books that are sensual but not erotic, gripping but not graphic, here are a few choices in a few genres.

    This is exactly what I state in my Romantic Comedy called Unabridged, in the form of an article named "Billionaires, BDSM&blah-blah-blah", accompanied by an illustration portraying women and cave-women. I couldn't agree more, Carmen!

To prologue or not to prologue, that is the question. Readers, please weigh in!

Personally, I love prologues. They get you right into the action whether it was in the past or something exciting that is to come. But that’s exactly why most agents’ blogs I’ve read say not to use them. Paraphrasing…“If you need a prologue, then your story must not be strong enough…” Hmm … well, I like them, and I use them. But I’m curious what readers think, and I’d love you to weigh in. AND, if you have some great examples, please leave the title in the comment section. Now … here’s what I’ve noticed. Plenty of bestselling books have used them, even though they aren’t always called prologues . Same diff in my opinion. My biggest example is ‘Twilight’. If that little blurb wasn’t in the beginning, I don’t think I would have made it through the first chapter. How about movies? I don’t watch a lot. But I’ve started to notice how many have “prologues”. I also don’t have cable, but I have NetFlix, and hubby has just started watching ‘Breaking Bad’. Okay … I
